Frequently Asked Questions

If you want to post a question, email me. I don't guarantee to answer every question, but I promise to answer some.

Q. What was it like, being in the Munich Olympic Village when the terrorists took other athletes hostage just down the street?

A. Surreal. I had watched the Israeli weight lifters compete the day before, which made it more personal to me. But it was still so strange I could hardly believe it was happening.

We whitewater racers were very lucky that we had already competed. I left the village and did not come back until the crisis was over.

International sport has never since been the same.

Here's one link to an AP article on the issue; I'm quoted, among others:

Q. How did it feel to win a bronze medal?

A. Very cool. Though it felt just as cool to win a silver in the World Championships (racing with a partner this time, Lecky Haller) fifteen years later, in France. The nice thing about the bronze is that other people still remember it. Funny how no one cares about the World Championships.
